OUR STORY AND COMMUNITY BONDS
Embrace Faith in Community
The Muslim community in Inverclyde began to grow from 2010, with many Muslims coming to the area for work and business. At that time, there was no local prayer facility, and the nearest Islamic centre was in Glasgow, around 23 miles away. To support the community, Friday (Jumu’ah) prayers were first arranged above the Gift Centre shop. When the shop closed, Mohammed Akhtar continued to support the community by arranging Friday prayers above his shop, allowing local Muslims to pray together. From 2015 onwards, Inverclyde, especially Greenock, welcomed many Syrian and Afghan refugees. The Muslim community worked closely with these families to support their religious and community needs and help them settle into their new lives. In 2018, Mohammed Akhtar, founder of Inverclyde Muslim Centre, worked with local businessmen and community members to formally establish the centre as a place of worship and community support. Today, the Inverclyde Muslim Centre serves many different nationalities and is run entirely by volunteers. The centre provides a space for prayer, learning, and community activities. The doors of Inverclyde Muslim Centre are open to all. We welcome people of all backgrounds and faiths, including schools, local organisations, and individuals who wish to learn more about Islam. The centre continues to play an important role in supporting the Muslim community and promoting understanding across Inverclyde.
